Google’s own peer benchmark system groups apps by category to generate the conversion and engagement comparisons that developers use to evaluate performance, pulling from the same tagging systems that power the store’s discovery experience. 

And because performance on Google Play is always relative, an app can have genuinely strong numbers and still underperform, simply because it’s being measured against the wrong peer set. In those cases, the ceiling isn’t a creative problem or a metadata problem; rather, it’s a framing problem.

To start off, let’s answer an essential question: when do teams start asking if Category selection is an issue or not? The trigger is usually a gap between effort and results. For games, unlike the App Store, Google Play only allows one primary category per app. That makes the decision higher-stakes than it might seem. One thing worth clarifying upfront is that, contrary to popular belief, changing your category won’t move keyword rankings. Search visibility on Google Play is driven by ASO best practices and metadata relevance (title, short description, long description), and category selection has no bearing on that. Google’s algorithm indexes apps based on what’s in those fields, not which category they sit in.

How to Measure a Category Change Cleanly

Teams often wonder if it’s possible to measure the effects of a category change in a clear way. A few things need to be in place first. If a category change happens alongside a major product update, a paid push, or a round of store listing experiments, isolating the impact becomes nearly impossible. The cleanest approach is to change the category on its own, then compare equivalent time periods before and after across core markets through a sequential analysis.

This matters more than it might seem. Explore is already a notoriously opaque channel, and since February 2023, Google moved categorical searches into Explore traffic rather than Search. That means Explore is now accounting for traffic that used to belong to total organic search, adding extra variables and noise to the analysis of an already murky organic traffic signal.

Case Study: Gangstar New Orleans

A strong example comes from work conducted by Claudia Trujillo (now a Phiture team member) on Gangstar New Orleans on Google Play during her time working as an ASO Expert at Gameloft, a case-study which she presented at the ASO Conference in 2023.
The game had been categorized under Action since launch. While not an unreasonable choice, the numbers told a different story. Conversion sat below the category median, and Explore visibility never materialized in a meaningful way.

Claudia worked with the Gameloft team to evaluate several alternatives, including Role-Playing, Adventure, and Simulation. Role-Playing emerged as the strongest contextual match based on the app’s mechanics, audience overlap, and competitive dynamics within each category.
This accounted for the volume of downloads the game was already having on a daily basis (on average) and how many downloads were competitors from other prospect categories having: we wanted the game to be placed at a category where current performance would shine over category competitors, rather than putting the game in the shade among other stars. 

After implementing the switch with the game, the results came through clearly. Conversion improved against the new peer group, with the overall percentile jumping from 46th to 62nd (+16 points) and the conversion rate rising +3.34 percentile points above the peer median. Category rankings climbed +120 positions, from an average of 174th in Action to 54th in Role-Playing. Explore traffic saw the biggest gains, with visitors up 10.59% and acquisitions up 6.18%, moving from the 54th to the 66th percentile. Algorithmic featuring also became more frequent, occurrences increased +64% and featuring-driven downloads rose +40%, all without any content being actively pitched to the store.

What made this particularly compelling was what didn’t happen: there was no editorial pitching involved, and no additional spend, in their case. The improvement came entirely from placing the app in a context where its existing strengths were recognized rather than diluted.

What You’re Actually Optimizing

A category change never boosts performance in a vacuum. It simply shifts how existing performance gets interpreted by the platform, and that distinction matters more than it might seem.

This isn’t a small distinction. Conversion rates vary dramatically across categories: AppTweak data from the first half of 2024 puts the Google Play average at 27.3% in the US, but individual categories swing well above and below that figure. The same volume of downloads and CVR can look weak or competitive depending entirely on who you’re being measured against, a situation where getting the peer group wrong and strong execution just gets lost in the noise.

When the category fit is right, benchmarks become realistic, Explore systems respond more favorably, and the work you’ve already done gets the credit it deserves. In effect, it reduces the distance between what your app actually does and how the platform reads it.

It’s important to note that category changes aren’t always the right move for certain ASO teams. For one, when the fit is forced, users may often notice. What’s more, category expectations that don’t align with the actual product experience will push conversion down rather than up, and if the goal is to compensate for weak fundamentals rather than reframe strong ones, the outcome will be negative.
